Tour de Shawnee Hitting the Road Again
“Come Ride With Us”
Preparations are underway for the tenth annual Tour de Shawnee cyclists’ ride scheduled for Saturday, October 20, 2018. With more than 200 plus riders from six states last year, we expect even more participants this year. Rider feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we continue to make improvements to the event with the help of our business sponsors and local volunteers.
The ride originates at the Horseshoe Lake Community Center located on State Highway 3 in Olive Branch, Illinois. Cyclists may choose from a Century ride (100 miles), a Metric Century (60 miles), 45 miles, and a Mid-length ride (30 miles) or a Leisurely ride (15 miles). The routes will wind through terrain that includes easy-ride flat stretches, rolling hills as well as a few (several) challenging hills. Unique rest stops with food and fluids will be conveniently located along the routes. The old Thebes Courthouse built in 1848 is always a favorite with the cyclists. The local 4-H club is set-up at Egyptian School and on County Line road. Cyclist will have the opportunity to leave the Cache Wetlands traveling several miles to the Pulaski Pecan Festival at the fairgrounds (which is becoming a favorite stop). Cyclists will travel to the Horseshoe Lake spillway before ending their ride at the Horseshoe Lake Community Center. Hot chili will be available for them as they end the day.
Cyclists can register online and further information can be found on the Tour de Shawnee Facebook page. Registrations received prior to October 7 cost $40 and guarantees a tee shirt plus event bag. Contact the Alexander County Tourism Board of Directors for more information.
On-site pre-registration will begin on Friday, October 19 from 5:30 p.m. ending at 7:00 p.m. There will be an on-site tailgate party consisting of fish, baked beans, and slaw. The meal is also free to volunteers and sponsors of the Tour de Shawnee. On Saturday morning, the Tour de Shawnee will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 20. Doors will open at 6 a.m.
Event proceeds will benefit the local community, but just as important is the tourism money generated by those traveling here for the event.
